Trazodone is a prescription serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor (SARI) commonly used in dogs and cats to manage situational anxiety, noise phobia, fear-based aggression, and to support calm rest during post-surgical recovery. It is one of the most widely prescribed behavioral medications in small-animal practice because it works quickly, is generally well tolerated, and can be combined with other anxiolytics under veterinary supervision.
What trazodone is used for
Pet owners are commonly prescribed trazodone for events like thunderstorms, fireworks, vet visits, grooming, car travel, boarding, the arrival of a new baby or houseguest, and the strict rest period that follows orthopedic surgery such as TPLO or fracture repair. Onset of effect is typically 30–90 minutes after dosing, and the calming effect generally lasts 6–10 hours. It does not provide pain relief, so it is often paired with an NSAID or other analgesic when used post-operatively.
Important considerations
Trazodone should be used only under the direction of a veterinarian. Common side effects include sedation, mild gastrointestinal upset, and occasional disinhibition (a paradoxical increase in excitement) — if your pet becomes more agitated rather than calmer, stop the medication and call your veterinarian. Trazodone can interact with other serotonergic drugs (including fluoxetine, sertraline, tramadol, and certain MAOIs), and dose adjustments may be needed in pets with liver, kidney, or heart disease. It is not recommended in pets with serotonin syndrome, severe cardiac disease, or known hypersensitivity to the drug.
Trial-dose your pet at home before the stressful event so you can confirm tolerance and adjust dosing with your veterinarian if needed. Always follow the prescribed dose, even when your pet seems anxious between doses.
