Bravecto Plus Topical for Cats is a prescription spot-on solution from Merck Animal Health that combines fluralaner and moxidectin in a single application given every 2 months. One dose kills fleas and ticks, prevents heartworm disease, and treats intestinal roundworm and hookworm infections in cats 6 months of age and older weighing at least 2.6 lb.
Key facts
- Active ingredients: fluralaner (minimum 18.2 mg/lb) and moxidectin (minimum 0.9 mg/lb) per dose
- Species: cats and kittens 6 months of age and older, 2.6 lb and up
- Available sizes: 112.5 mg/5.6 mg tube (2.6–6.2 lb), 250 mg/12.5 mg tube (6.2–13.8 lb), 500 mg/25 mg tube (13.8–27.5 lb), in 1-, 3-, and 6-dose packs
- Form: topical solution applied to the skin at the base of the skull every 2 months
- Coverage: fleas, ticks, heartworm disease prevention, and treatment of roundworms (Toxocara cati) and hookworms (Ancylostoma tubaeforme)
- Prescription: required — dispensed with veterinarian authorization
How to use
Wearing gloves, part the fur and apply the entire tube contents directly to the skin at the base of the skull; use a second spot slightly behind the first if needed to avoid run-off. Repeat every 2 months. Cats over 27.5 lb receive an appropriate combination of tubes. For heartworm prevention, Bravecto Plus may be given year-round or at minimum from the cat's first to last seasonal mosquito exposure; if a dose is late, apply immediately and resume the 2-month schedule.
Safety information
For topical use only; avoid oral ingestion and do not allow children to contact the application site for 2 hours. The product is flammable — keep away from heat and open flame. Fluralaner is an isoxazoline-class drug; this class has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures, even in cats without a history of neurologic disorders — use with caution in cats with such a history. Use with caution in heartworm-positive cats. Not shown effective in kittens under 6 months, and safety has not been established in breeding, pregnant, or lactating cats. A temporary greasy or wet appearance may occur at the application site.
Frequently asked questions
How long does Bravecto Plus last?
One application protects for 2 months, so a cat needs only six doses per year for continuous flea, tick, and heartworm coverage.
Does Bravecto Plus prevent heartworm disease?
Yes. The moxidectin component prevents heartworm disease when the product is applied at 2-month intervals. It also treats existing roundworm and hookworm infections.
Is Bravecto Plus safe for cats with neurologic disorders?
Use with caution. Neurologic adverse reactions such as tremors, ataxia, and seizures have been reported with isoxazoline-class drugs, even in cats without a prior history; ask your veterinarian first.
Is a prescription required?
Yes. Bravecto Plus is a prescription medication and requires authorization from a veterinarian who has examined your cat within the past 12 months.
