Denamarin Tablets from Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences are the most widely recommended liver health supplement for dogs and cats, combining S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) with a silybin-phosphatidylcholine complex in an enteric-coated tablet. SAMe helps support glutathione, the liver's most important antioxidant, while silybin, the active flavonoid from milk thistle, helps support bile flow and liver cell health.
Key facts
- Active ingredients: 90 mg SAMe + 9 mg silybin A+B (cats & small dogs), 225 mg + 24 mg (medium dogs), or 425 mg + 35 mg (large dogs) per tablet
- Species: Dogs and cats
- Available sizes: 30-count blister packs in 90 mg, 225 mg, and 425 mg strengths
- Form: Enteric-coated tablet; must be given whole
- Typical use cases: Support for elevated liver enzyme values, liver support during long-term medication, and chronic or age-related liver concerns, as recommended by your veterinarian
- Brand: Nutramax Laboratories, the #1 veterinarian-recommended supplement company
How to use
Give on an empty stomach, at least one hour before a meal, for optimal absorption. Typical daily amounts: cats and dogs up to 12 lb, one 90 mg tablet; dogs 13-34 lb, one 225 mg tablet; dogs 35-65 lb, one 425 mg tablet; larger dogs may need two or more 425 mg tablets, or as directed by your veterinarian. Give tablets whole; do not split or crush them, as the coating protects the SAMe. For cats, follow the tablet with a small amount of water.
Safety information
Denamarin is well tolerated in dogs and cats with a wide margin of safety. Store in a cool, dry place and keep out of the reach of children and animals. Denamarin is a supplement, not a substitute for diagnosis; if your pet's liver values are abnormal, your veterinarian will want to determine the underlying cause.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Denamarin and Denosyl?
Denosyl provides SAMe alone; Denamarin pairs SAMe with silybin from milk thistle for additional liver support. Your veterinarian will recommend the right one for your pet.
Can I give Denamarin with food?
No. Food substantially reduces SAMe absorption, so give Denamarin on an empty stomach at least one hour before feeding. This is the most common administration mistake.
What is the difference between Denamarin and Denamarin Advanced?
Denamarin Advanced uses a next-generation SAMe with enhanced absorption plus more silybin in a smaller tablet, allowing scored, divisible chewables for dogs. Original Denamarin remains the classic enteric-coated option for dogs and cats.
How long does Denamarin take to work?
Many veterinarians recheck liver values after several weeks of daily use; response depends on the underlying condition. Read our in-depth guide, What You Need to Know About Denamarin.
