Doxycycline Hyclate Tablet 100mg
Doxycycline is a tetracycline-class antibiotic and the veterinary treatment of choice for many tick-borne diseases, respiratory infections, and certain skin conditions in dogs and cats. It is also a key component of the heartworm "slow-kill" and pre-melarsomine treatment protocols. Doxycycline works by blocking bacterial protein synthesis and has activity against a wide range of organisms, including Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, Rickettsia, Borrelia (Lyme), Mycoplasma, Bartonella, Chlamydia, and many strains of Leptospira.
What doxycycline is used for
The most common indications in dogs are tick-borne diseases — ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Lyme disease — where treatment courses typically run 28 days or longer. In cats, doxycycline is used for upper respiratory infections caused by Mycoplasma, Chlamydia felis, and Bordetella. It is also used for certain leptospirosis cases, infected wounds, and as part of the heartworm pre-treatment protocol to weaken Wolbachia bacteria living inside heartworms.
Important considerations
Always give doxycycline with a meaningful amount of water (and ideally with food) — undissolved tablets can lodge in the esophagus, especially in cats, causing strictures. For cats, follow each dose with a small drink of water, a few licks of broth, or a pill-pocket treat. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite. Doxycycline can permanently stain the teeth of young animals and should be avoided in pregnant pets and growing puppies and kittens unless specifically directed by your veterinarian. Do not give with dairy products, antacids, or iron supplements within 1–2 hours, as these reduce absorption. Photosensitivity has been reported.
