Onsior (robenacoxib) is a coxib-class non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) FDA-approved for the control of post-operative pain and inflammation in cats — one of the few NSAIDs labeled for use in cats — and also approved in dogs. Robenacoxib selectively inhibits the COX-2 enzyme that drives pain and inflammation while sparing much of the COX-1 activity that protects the stomach lining, kidneys, and platelets. It is also notable for concentrating in inflamed tissues and clearing quickly from the bloodstream, which is thought to improve its safety profile.
What Onsior is used for
The cat label is for the control of post-operative pain and inflammation associated with orthopedic surgery, ovariohysterectomy (spay), and castration (neuter), for up to 3 days. The dog label includes control of pain and inflammation associated with soft-tissue surgery and short-term use for acute musculoskeletal disorders. Onsior is supplied as flavored tablets that most cats and dogs accept readily, which is one of the reasons it has become a go-to short-term feline NSAID in clinics.
Important considerations
For cats, the labeled use is short-term only (up to 3 days). For dogs, both short-term and longer courses are used under veterinary direction with appropriate monitoring. Common side effects include vomiting, soft stool or diarrhea, and decreased appetite. Serious but rare effects include GI ulceration, kidney injury, and idiosyncratic liver reactions — call your veterinarian immediately if your pet stops eating, vomits repeatedly, develops black or tarry stool, or becomes jaundiced. Do not combine with other NSAIDs or with corticosteroids (prednisone, prednisolone). Use cautiously in patients with kidney, liver, or bleeding disorders, and in dehydrated patients. Always give exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian.
