Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used in dogs and cats for the long-term management of behavioral disorders rooted in anxiety and reactivity. The veterinary brand Reconcile is FDA-approved for canine separation anxiety, and generic fluoxetine is also widely prescribed off-label for fear-based aggression, urine marking in cats, compulsive behaviors (tail chasing, lick granuloma, over-grooming), and storm phobia. Fluoxetine works by increasing the availability of serotonin in the brain, helping the patient stay below the threshold where reactive behaviors take over.
What fluoxetine is used for
Common indications include canine separation anxiety (panic when left alone, destructive chewing, vocalization, indoor accidents despite house-training), generalized anxiety, fear-based reactivity toward people or other dogs, noise phobia, compulsive disorders, and feline house-soiling and urine marking. Fluoxetine is intended to be paired with a behavior-modification plan from your veterinarian or a board-certified veterinary behaviorist — medication alone rarely solves a behavior problem.
Important considerations
Fluoxetine is a daily medication and takes 4–8 weeks to reach full effect — owners often see only subtle changes in the first 2 weeks. Common early side effects include reduced appetite, lethargy, and mild GI upset, which usually resolve within the first 1–2 weeks. Less common effects include irritability, restlessness, or new-onset aggression — if your pet seems worse after starting fluoxetine, contact your veterinarian. Do not combine fluoxetine with other serotonergic drugs (trazodone, tramadol, MAOIs, selegiline) without veterinary direction; the combination can rarely cause serotonin syndrome. Do not stop fluoxetine abruptly after long-term use — taper under guidance.
