NexGard PLUS (afoxolaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel chewable tablets) from Boehringer Ingelheim is a once-monthly prescription soft chew that protects dogs against fleas, ticks, heartworm disease, roundworms, and hookworms in a single dose. It is approved for dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older weighing at least 4 lb.

Key facts

  • Active ingredients: afoxolaner (an isoxazoline), moxidectin, and pyrantel (as pamoate salt)
  • Species: dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older, weighing 4 lb or more
  • Protects against: fleas, ticks, heartworm disease (prevention), roundworms, and hookworms
  • Available sizes: five color-coded weight bands — Orange (4–8 lb), Green (8.1–17 lb), Yellow (17.1–33 lb), Purple (33.1–66 lb), Red (66.1–132 lb) — in 1, 3, 6, or 12-dose packs
  • Form: flavored soft chew given once monthly

How to use

Give one chew by mouth once a month, with or without food, at the strength your veterinarian prescribes for your dog's weight. Make sure your dog consumes the complete dose and that no part is lost or refused. If a dose is missed, give a NexGard PLUS chew as soon as possible and resume the monthly schedule.

Safety information

Dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection before starting NexGard PLUS or any heartworm preventive. Afoxolaner belongs to the isoxazoline class, which has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures — reported even in dogs without a prior seizure history; use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders. The most frequently reported adverse reactions in clinical trials were diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, and itching. Safe use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs has not been evaluated. For dogs only.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between NexGard and NexGard PLUS?

NexGard (afoxolaner) covers fleas and ticks only. NexGard PLUS adds moxidectin and pyrantel, so one chew also prevents heartworm disease and treats and controls roundworms and hookworms.

Does NexGard PLUS kill ticks?

Yes. The afoxolaner component kills fleas before they can lay eggs and treats and controls tick infestations for a full month per dose.

Is a prescription required for NexGard PLUS?

Yes. NexGard PLUS is a prescription medication, so your veterinarian must authorize it under a valid vet-client-patient relationship.

Does my dog need a heartworm test before starting NexGard PLUS?

Yes. Because it contains a heartworm preventive (moxidectin), dogs should test negative for existing heartworm infection before their first dose, with retesting as your veterinarian recommends.

Is NexGard PLUS safe for dogs with a history of seizures?

Use with caution. Isoxazoline-class drugs have been associated with tremors, ataxia, and seizures, even in dogs without a prior history. Discuss your dog's neurologic history with your veterinarian before starting.
