Ronidazole is a nitroimidazole antiprotozoal medication that veterinarians commonly prescribe for cats diagnosed with Tritrichomonas foetus (often called "Trich") — a protozoal infection of the large intestine that causes chronic, foul-smelling diarrhea, loose stool, and rectal inflammation. Because there is no FDA-approved veterinary formulation of ronidazole in the United States, it is dispensed as a custom-compounded preparation tailored to each individual patient's prescription.

This medication is prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy partnered with Smarty Vets and dispensed only after your veterinarian's prescription has been verified. Each order is custom-compounded to the exact strength, volume, and dosage form your veterinarian specifies — most commonly a flavored oral suspension or precisely measured capsules — so dosing is accurate for your cat's weight and easier to administer at home. Our pharmacy partner operates under state Board of Pharmacy oversight and follows USP guidelines for non-sterile compounded preparations, giving pet parents a trusted, regulated source for a medication that is otherwise difficult to obtain.

What it is used for

Ronidazole is the treatment most widely used in feline practice for Tritrichomonas foetus, a condition diagnosed by PCR testing of fresh fecal samples. Affected cats often present with cow-pat or watery diarrhea, increased frequency of defecation, mucus or fresh blood in the stool, and an inflamed anal area. Many cats remain bright, alert, and continue to eat normally, which helps differentiate Trich from other gastrointestinal diseases.

Important considerations

Ronidazole is a prescription medication and must be dispensed under a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship. It should be handled with gloves, stored away from children and other pets, and given exactly as prescribed for the full course. Possible side effects include lethargy, inappetence, and rare neurologic signs — contact your veterinarian immediately if any of these occur. Ronidazole is not recommended for pregnant cats, nursing queens, or kittens younger than the age your veterinarian advises.
