Cephalexin Capsule

Cephalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic and one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in veterinary medicine. Sold as Rilexine (the FDA-approved chewable tablet for dogs) and as generic capsules, tablets, and compounded oral liquids, cephalexin is a workhorse drug for bacterial skin infections, soft-tissue infections, and certain urinary tract infections in dogs and cats.

What cephalexin is used for

The most common indication is canine superficial pyoderma — the bacterial skin infection that frequently develops on top of allergies, leaving dogs with red bumps, crusts, and patchy hair loss. Cephalexin is also used for deep pyoderma, infected wounds, surgical-site infections, urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria, and for certain bone and joint infections. Treatment courses are typically 21–30 days for superficial pyoderma and longer for deep infections — finishing the entire course is essential to prevent relapse and resistance.

Important considerations

Give cephalexin with food to reduce nausea. Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite; rare but serious reactions include allergic reactions (facial swelling, hives) and excitability. Do not use in pets with a known cephalosporin or penicillin allergy. The drug is cleared by the kidneys, so dose adjustments may be needed in pets with renal disease. Cephalexin is not effective against viral or fungal infections — using antibiotics inappropriately drives resistance, which is why a culture and sensitivity test is sometimes recommended for recurrent or deep infections.
