Clavamox Chewable Tablet

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin-class antibiotic widely prescribed in dogs and cats for bacterial infections of the skin, urinary tract, respiratory tract, and oral cavity. When combined with clavulanic acid (the combination is sold as Clavamox), the antibiotic spectrum is extended to cover bacteria that produce beta-lactamase enzymes — making Clavamox a common first-line choice for skin and soft-tissue infections, abscesses, infected wounds, and many urinary tract infections in dogs and cats.

What amoxicillin and Clavamox are used for

Common indications include superficial pyoderma and hot spots, post-bite wound infections, periodontal disease and dental abscesses, lower urinary tract infections, and certain respiratory infections such as bordetella-related kennel cough. For dental and skin infections, treatment courses commonly run 7–21 days; urinary infections may be treated 7–14 days. The drops formulation of Clavamox is particularly useful in cats and small dogs, where pill administration is difficult.

Important considerations

Always finish the entire prescribed course, even if your pet seems better after a few days — stopping early is the leading cause of antibiotic resistance and recurrent infection. Give amoxicillin or Clavamox with food to reduce GI upset. Common side effects include vomiting, soft stool or diarrhea, and decreased appetite; serious but rare side effects include allergic reactions (facial swelling, hives, difficulty breathing) — seek emergency care if these occur. Do not use in pets with a known penicillin or cephalosporin allergy. Refrigerate the reconstituted Clavamox liquid and discard 10 days after mixing.
