Gabapentin is a prescription medication used in dogs and cats for chronic pain (especially neuropathic pain), as an adjunct anticonvulsant for seizure control, and for situational anxiety — most famously the “Fear Free” pre-visit dose given to anxious cats before veterinary appointments. Its calming and analgesic effects are mediated through voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system rather than through opioid or serotonin pathways, which is why it pairs safely with most other analgesics.

What gabapentin is used for

Common veterinary uses include osteoarthritis pain in older dogs and cats (often combined with an NSAID), intervertebral disc disease, post-surgical pain, cancer pain, and the burning, electric-shock-like nerve pain of conditions such as feline orofacial pain syndrome. For anxiety, a single dose given 1.5–3 hours before a vet visit, car ride, or grooming appointment can dramatically reduce stress. As an add-on seizure medication, it is dosed multiple times per day alongside the pet's primary anticonvulsant.

Important considerations

Gabapentin is generally safe but can cause sedation, mild incoordination, and occasionally GI upset. Cats may appear unusually wobbly for a few hours after a high anxiolytic dose — this is expected and resolves on its own. The dose for pain is much lower than the dose for pre-visit anxiety, and your veterinarian will tailor it to your pet. Doses must be reduced in patients with kidney disease, since the drug is cleared renally. Important: only use the formulation prescribed for your pet — human liquid gabapentin contains xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs. Smarty Vets dispenses only veterinary-appropriate, xylitol-free gabapentin.

Do not stop gabapentin suddenly if your pet has been on it for seizure control or chronic pain — taper under veterinary guidance to avoid breakthrough symptoms.
